Commonly Used Terms in the NICU

The moment you realize that you will spend a grand part of your child’s beginning in the NICU is a scary one. However, what is most frighting is not understanding what all the medical terms are and feeling unequipped to be your child’s best advocate due to lack of knowledge. We hope that this list of words and their definitions will help equip you to better understand what your
baby’s NICU doctors inform you daily. Also, always remind yourself that it’s okay to not understand. In those confusing moments make sure to ask all the questions you have in your mind when the nurses or doctors are speaking to you about your child. You are their biggest cheerleader and advocate, don’t be afraid to voice your opinions and follow your gut feeling.
